Research Grants
The research grant review criteria have been updated to be similar to the new NIH Simplified Peer Review Framework. For more details, visit the Frequently Asked Questions.
NEW in 2026: Designated funding for cost savings research will support studies in any research grant program that propose to examine the cost savings of services (including assessment, screening, diagnosis, and/or treatment) within the CSD discipline. Policy makers are interested in the monetary value and cost savings of providing services on the long-term total cost of care. Historical advocacy arguments about quality of life, independence, functional status, and equity need to be enhanced by accurate data on the downstream costs that are avoided by upstream services provided by the professions. Some examples of possible outcomes include: total cost of care, length of stay, readmission rates, discharge setting, secondary and tertiary prevention, preventable adverse events, savings on discontinued medical interventions. Studies on all populations and health care settings are welcome while outpatient and developmental disorders will be prioritized.
Coming Soon: Artificial Intelligence in Communication Sciences and Disorders Research Grant
Supports interdisciplinary studies that investigate the integration of artificial intelligence into communication sciences and disorders research to advance discovery, research, clinical practice, and access.
For: Researchers (with a PhD or equivalent research doctorate in CSD or related discipline)
Award: Up to four grants of $25,000–$50,000 each

Supports collaborative studies that will increase knowledge to improve services for individuals with communication disorders.
For: Partnerships of researchers (with a PhD or equivalent research doctorate in CSD or related discipline) and practitioners (with a degree in audiology, speech-language pathology or related field)
Award: Up to four grants of $35,000 for each team

Supports innovative studies that foster new research ideas and directions for investigators, and that will advance knowledge, tools, and techniques in communication sciences and disorders.

Award: Up to four grants of $25,000 each

Supports new investigators by funding preliminary studies that could launch larger-scale research investigations.

Supports studies by new investigators pursuing research in speech science.

Supports student research studies in clinical and/or rehabilitative audiology.
For: Students who are enrolled full time in doctoral (research or clinical) degree programs in audiology or hearing science in the U.S.
Award: Up to three grants of $4,000 each

Supports student research studies in early childhood language development.
For: Students who are enrolled full time in master's or doctoral (research or clinical) degree programs in speech-language pathology or speech-language science in the U.S.

Clinical Research Grant
Advances knowledge of treatment efficacy and assessment practices. When applying for a Clinical Research Grant, applicants will be able to choose one of the three support options listed below, depending on the type of research study.
For: Researchers (with a PhD or equivalent research doctorate in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) or related discipline)
Award: Up to four grants of $50,000–$75,000 each
Deadline: Next program will be offered in 2027
- Independent Research Studies
- For investigators early in their careers who are developing an independent research record or for experienced researchers who are pursuing a new effort.
- Collaborative Research Studies
- For mid-career investigators, who may have an extensive research history, who will collaborate with other investigators.
Scholarships
Supports doctoral students committed to a teacher-investigator career in the U.S.
For: Students who are enrolled in, or accepted to, a research doctoral program (PhD or equivalent) in CSD
Award: Up to 15 scholarships of $10,000 each
Deadline: May 13, 2026
Supports CSD graduate students who demonstrate academic achievement and promise.
For: Students who are undergraduate seniors accepted to a master’s program, or students currently pursuing master’s or doctoral (research or clinical) degrees
Award: Up to 15 scholarships of $5,000 each

When applying for the Graduate Student Scholarship, you will be able to indicate if you would also like to be considered for the following scholarship categories. You are able to apply for any that you are eligible for, but you will receive a maximum of one award.
- For students who are non-U.S. citizens studying in the United States. (International Student Scholarship)
- For students who are members of a racial or ethnic minority group and are U.S. citizens. (Minority Student Scholarship)
- For undergraduate senior students with active National NSSLHA memberships and who will begin graduate study in the fall. (NSSLHA Scholarship)
- For students with a disability. (Student Disability Scholarship)
- For students pursuing research in speech sound disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, phonetic transcription, and genetic conditions affecting speech. (Dr. Lawrence D. Shriberg Memorial Scholarship)
- For students pursuing research that contributes to evidence-based practices in speech, language, or hearing. (Dr. Sadanand Singh Scholarship)
Clinical Achievement Awards
Honors an individual's outstanding contributions to CSD over a period of at least 20 years.
For: Clinicians (who have contributed to clinical service, supervision or administration of clinical service, clinical research, or any other activity that has promoted clinical excellence over a lifetime)
Award: Commemorative art object

Recognize a significant accomplishment in clinical practice within the past six years in audiology and/or speech-language pathology.
For: Clinicians (who have made a single, specific, well-defined achievement)
Award: $2,500
Deadline: April 15, 2026
Recognizes an individual's exemplary commitment and contribution to the delivery of audiology and/or speech-language pathology services within a school setting.
For: Clinicians (audiologists or speech-language pathologists employed by a school system)
