2024 Steer Session Speakers

Fabrizio Arosio is associate professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy, where he focuses on language acquisition in typically and atypically developing populations. His work has contributed to advancements in the acquisition of morphosyntax and its relationship to executive functions. His recent research focuses on the relation between rhythmic and linguistic abilities and how digital technologies can help investigate it. At this conference, he will discuss how we can use artificial intelligence to identify language disorders based on measures of rhythmic abilities.

Eleonora Beccaluva is a doctoral student at Università Milano Bicocca and Ux Research Lead at Arduino, where she focused on advanced technologies as a tool to support NDD, language disorders, and research. Her work has contributed to advancements in applying artificial intelligence, IoT, and immersive technology to the identification and treatment of developmental language disorders. At this conference, she will discuss The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Revolutionizing Assessment and Treatment of Communication Disorder providing new insights into the role that AI can play in this field.

Michael Doellinger is a Professor at the Division of Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuernberg, where he focuses on fundamentals in voice science applying methods from the area of artificial intelligence and fluid dynamics. His work has contributed to advancements in understanding the fluid-structure-acoustic interaction during phonation and quantitative voice assessment. At this conference, he will discuss machine learning methods enabling quantitative voice disorder assessment, providing new insights into machine learning-based image processing of endoscopic high-speed recordings and data analysis.

Monica Murero is an expert in Digital Health. She is an Associate Professor at Federico II University, Italy, where she teaches two graduate courses: Digital Communication, Social Media, and Health, as well as Communication and New Technologies. She focuses on the controversial impacts of innovative technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), on society and communication. Since 2006, she has been focusing on the role of AI in revolutionizing the treatment of communication disorders. She explores how interdigital advancements and automated communication reshape human-machine interactions and societal structures. At this conference, she will discuss the challenges and the innovative role of artificial intelligence in addressing severe speech impairment, providing new insight into innovative interdigital therapeutics enhancing augmentative and alternative communication and communication in everyday life.

Rupal Patel is a professor and a lab director with interdisciplinary appointments in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University in Boston, where she focuses on research and innovation at the intersection of speech neuroscience and assistive/augmentative technologies. Until its acquisition by Veritone in 2022, Rupal was the founder and CEO of VocaliD, an artificial intelligence company that created personalized synthetic voices for individuals living with speechlessness. At this conference, she will discuss how to leverage AI and design computational tools to measure speech and voice function, decide on a differential diagnosis, and implement personalized interventions based on evidence-based findings and real-world data.
